How will we manage the high temperatures of the desert in the summer?
We’ll generally be active in the mornings, we’ll get in the water every day in some capacity, and we’ll do most of our driving (with A/C!) in the afternoons during the hottest part of the day.
Mesa Arch, Canyonlands
Hiking in Zion
Itinerary
Full but not frantic. Active but not rushed.
Day 0 - (This option is available instead of meeting directly in Moab the next day.) Depart Las Vegas. Hike into Buckskin Gulch. Set up camp at Lone Rock Beach then enjoy a magnificent sunset at Horseshoe Bend.
Day 1 - Officially meet in Moab, UT this evening and camp in town. (Those riding in the van from Las Vegas will stop at Monument Valley this morning and arrive in Moab this evening.)
Day 2 - Explore Arches National Park! We'll start with Delicate Arch and spend the day in the park hiking to Landscape Arch, etc. Camp in Moab.
Day 3 - Another morning of exploring Arches including Double Arch, Balanced Rock, the Windows, etc. It's a short drive to Canyonlands to explore the magnificent overlooks, Mesa Arch, and stop at the Visitor Center. It's another quick drive to Dead Horse Point State Park to set up camp, enjoy the views, and marvel at the spectacular starry sky.
Day 4 -Enjoy sunrise then drive to Capitol Reef National Park to pick fruit in Fruita and to stop at the visitor center.
Continue on to Bryce Canyon. Set up camp, then hike the iconic Navajo loop trail, beginning and ending at Sunset Point.
Day 5 - Enjoy the sunrise at Bryce Canyon. Optional morning hike. Drive to Zion National Park. After setting up camp, we’ll take the shuttle to the end of the canyon and enter the world-famous “Zion Narrows” which involves hiking directly in the river of one of the world’s most incredible slot canyons.
Day 6 - Get on the first shuttle into the canyon and hike up Walter’s Wiggles to the world-famous Angel’s Landing! Explore Las Vegas and enjoy a night in a hotel.
Day 7 - Return home, with memories you'll keep for a lifetime!
Activity Level
3 - Moderate: For outdoor novices and above. (Rating System)
Activity: 4-6 hours most days
Distances: Hike up to 4 miles most days
Surfaces: rolling or mountainous terrain with some steep ascents/descents and uneven trails
Elevation change: up to 1,200 ft/day.
Max Altitude: Approximately 8,000ft in Bryce Canyon
Participants will carry light daypacks with water and snacks. The trails are safe but there are some steep sections and exposed overlooks on the various trails we hike.
I recommend a physical conditioning regimen beginning at least 3–5 months prior to departure which includes hiking with as much elevation gain and loss as possible with a weighted daypack, layering in as much additional cardiovascular exercise as manageable. Review your personal health and preparation plan with your physician prior to traveling.
